Optical mice last much longer than the old mice which had a ball as these used to clog up easily with fluff and dirt and would become difficult to use. You can also buy wireless optical mice which are even better as they have no cable so are easier to manoeuvre and also look very cool, they use a transmitter that is attached to your USB port.
