Welcome to the Laptop Memory page, memory is one of (if not the most) important part of a laptop and should be considered carefully when buying a laptop. Memory is what a laptop computer uses to store information that is currently being used, that is information that is being used by the processor to compute whatever is currently being processed. This is different to hard drive space which stores data permanently as memory only stores data that is currently needed by the computer and the more memory that the computer has the more data the laptop computer will be able to process at any one time.
So having more memory makes your laptop computer much quicker if you are running allot of applications as it enables the computer to process more information at the same time. Having a small amount of memory can also be a 'bottleneck' which is a single part of a computer that slows down the rest of the computer, for example your laptop could have a very fast processor but if you also have little memory then that fast processor will not be able to work to it's full capacity as it will not have enough memory to store the amount of data that it could use if you had more memory.
Laptop computer memory is measured in Megabytes (MB) and Gigabytes (GB) and 1 Gigabyte is equal to 1024 Megabytes. The standard offerings of memory generally double and in the old days 8 and 16 MB of memory was considered normal and before this there were computers that had much less. The minimum amount of memory that we would recommend is 256 MB as this is enough for general use of a computer but if you plan on running several applications then we recommend more. The next level is 512 MB which offer a nice amount of memory for general computer use with several applications running, there are also 1 GB and more available but these are generally only needed if you run very intensive applications.
The memory of a computer is also known as RAM which stands for Random Access Memory so if you see a laptop that says it has 512 MB of RAM then this means it has 512 MB of memory, the terms used depends on the shops but they both mean the same thing.
Memory is very cheap these days so laptops often offer allot of memory such as 512 MB of memory but most cheap laptops offer less so the trick is to find cheap laptops that have at least 512 MB or memory. We have made this very easy for you by listing lots of laptops on the right which all have 512 MB of RAM so will have enough RAM to run lots of applications. They are also listed with the cheapest first so finding a cheap laptop with lots of RAM is easy here and lots of the online shops have some very cheap deals.
